Trevor Christie

Trevor Christie

Would you mind introducing yourself? My name is Trevor Christie and I am a photographer from Western Washington. Photography has been my creative outlet to my studies in college and now my full-time job as a Mechanical Engineer. I usually subscribe to the “Weekend Warrior” mindset and get out and shoot on the weekends in places near and far from home.

When did you first fall in love with taking photos? I have been shooting since 2017, however, I can’t say that I fell in love with photography until last year. In May I took a trip to Alaska for a week that really sealed the deal. The landscape up there is unlike anything I’d ever seen. Till that trip, I think I was just shooting to do it. There really wasn’t a style or direction to any of my photographs. In Alaska, I felt like I gained an eye for certain subjects and became much more deliberate in the photographs I took.

Do you have a favourite photography related memory, whether it be in front or behind the camera? I live relatively close to Mount Rainier National Park and that seems to be my go-to place in the summer. Well, late last summer I went up there by myself to catch a sunset on a weeknight. I ended up meeting a few people while hiking to a popular fire lookout. The hike up was pretty socked in with clouds and we all didn’t expect much. One member from the group had a good feeling and muttered something along the lines of “give it a few more minutes” as we approached the fire lookout. Sure enough, the clouds parted ways right at sunset and the sky lit up. The photos I took that night are still some of my favourites. The people, the colours, the place - all made for my favourite photographic memory thus far.

What inspires your photography? A lot of my photographs are inspired by the colours produced around sunrise and sunset. In addition, I love when there are clouds in a landscape soaking up that colour! It is tough to beat that colour palette. To really delve into my photography inspiration, I’d need music. Seriously. I get a lot of my inspiration for colour and minimalism from the music I listen to. I have an ever-growing playlist on Spotify where I curate songs I thoroughly enjoy and often edit to. The music is mainly beats and tunes that give off a dreamy vibe that comes out in my photos.

What kind of camera do you use? Digital -> Nikon D5300, Film -> Pentax ME. A recent addition I am excited about is a Mamiya RB67 medium format camera. I plan to use it to shoot a few personal projects this summer involving Fire Lookouts around Washington. Lugging that around should be FUN :)

Who are some of your favourite photographers? Some of my favourite photographers have their own distinct styles. For example, Chris Burkard (Adventure), Chase Burnett (Landscapes), Joe Greer (Street & Style), Zach Leon (Street & Color), and Forest Mankins (Summertime Feelings). They all have such different styles and are a constant inspiration. I’ve found that inspiration is a funny thing, it doesn’t have to come from styles like your own.

What would be your number one dream destination for a photography adventure? I would love Lisbon in Portugal or the Patagonia region of Argentina.

Which time of year is your favourite for taking photographs? I really enjoy the shoulder seasons between Spring/Summer and Summer/Fall. The crowds are usually lower on some of the popular hikes around Washington and the bugs are not in full force.

Do you have any upcoming photography trips/sessions that you would like to share? This year I am trying to pursue medium format film photography and producing zines of some of my work. A lot of it will revolve around the summer months so stay tuned!
