Lena P.

Would you mind introducing yourself? My name is Lena and I'm a film photographer from North Wales, which is where I currently live and work.

How would you describe your style of photography? I shoot a lot of nature, portraits, the sea, the moon, flowers. I am fascinated by the cosmos, its influence on our energies, and places that resonate spiritually with me, so these themes are present in my work. I love the human form and in particular the feminine shapes. I do a lot of self-portraits, as a means of self-expression but also as a way of capturing archetypes.

When did you first fall in love with taking photos? I remember shooting film on an old Nikkormat camera when I was 14 and have had a few cameras over the years, but I would say I only really started to fall in love with it again when I moved back home last year. I felt really inspired by the landscape and began to feel that strong connection again.

Do you have a favourite photography related memory, whether it be in front or behind the camera? So many! Whenever I head out with my camera to shoot it's always an experience. Robert Adams once said 'no place is boring if you've had a good night's sleep and have a pocket full of unexposed film.' And I totally agree. There's always something to see, something to feel, whether you capture it on film or not. One memory I will treasure is from a recent trip to Crete. We got lost on a mountain high up on an old alpine track. I got out the car and was hit by the most amazing smell- On the side of the road were herds of mountain goats eating wild herbs like oregano and thyme. That hot, fragrant breeze and the wildness of the goats so high will stay with me forever.

Who/What inspires your photography? Where I live is my biggest inspiration for so many reasons; my love of nature, animals and plants, all these things are encapsulated in the landscape here. The island is even dearer to me as it's where I grew up and holds so many memories. My mum (who passed away when I was 13) used to photograph her friends with her film camera around the island and my dad too. Their photos continue to inspire me. And then there are of course other artists that inspire me, photographers, painters, writers, film directors; they help me to understand art and remind me to strive for integrity in my work - William Blake, Terence Malick, Luigi Ghuirri and Sigrid Undset to name a few.

What kind of camera do you use? I used an Olympus 10 and Yashica T4 for years until recently when I was given a Nikon FE2 as a birthday gift and it has been the start of a new love affair - I absolutely adore this camera.

What's your editing process like? Minimal. I only edit if a scan hasn’t quite captured the light I shot in. As I shoot a lot at dusk I often have to adjust the light so that the detail comes through and for example, the moon is visible and not overexposed. I am starting to experiment with editing a bit more though as it’s fun and feels creative.

Are there any tips you would like to give to anyone out there who would love to create similar style photos to yours? Find a camera that feels like an extension of you, photograph what you love, regularly and in good light.

What would be your number one dream destination for a photography adventure? The west coast of America - the forests and coasts look so beautiful and I've wanted to visit for years. I would also love to photograph more wild animals so safari in Africa and whale watching in Alaska would be a dream come true.

Which time of year is your favourite for taking photographs? Summer without a doubt. The long, balmy evenings are my favourite time to shoot.

The coolest place you've ever been? I have a lot of places where I live which I think are so unique and beautiful. I quite like keeping them a secret :)

Do you have any upcoming photography trips/sessions that you would like to share? Anywhere that's warm to escape the dark British winter! Also Italy soon I hope. But to be honest I’d love to travel anywhere with my camera.
