Would you mind introducing yourself? I’m John, an outdoor adventure and lifestyle photographer. I’m originally from Alaska, which is where I grew up from age 12 to 24. I recently relocated to Bellingham, Washington which is where I live now.
How would you describe your style of photography? I’ve always struggled with this question. I guess I’d describe my style as warm, colourful, and calming.

When did you first fall in love with taking photos? I remember taking photos at a young age, probably 6 or 7, but it never turned into a real hobby. I truly fell in love with photography back in 2014. I became totally obsessed after picking up my friends Canon Rebel and taking macro shots of some flowers in front of my cabin in northern Alaska.
Do you have a favourite photography related memory, whether it be in front or behind the camera? That’s a tough question. It’s hard to pick a favourite, I’ve seen so many beautiful moments through my viewfinder these past few years! One thing that’s always in the front of my memory is the feeling I get during summertime in Alaska. Adventures with endless daylight, driving with the windows down through mountains with music blasting, camera always by my side. It’s not one specific memory, more of a collection of them that manifests as a deep feeling of nostalgia.
Who/What inspires you to take these wonderful photographs? I’m inspired by a lot of people. Some of my closest friends are really great photographers. They constantly inspire and push me to get better at my craft and try new things. There’s also few creators that I’m always referring to for inspiration: Alex Strohl (@alexstrohl), Dylan Furst (@fursty), Benjamin Everett (@bejamin), Jason Charles Hill (@jasoncharleshill)
What kind of camera do you use? I use a Canon 6D.
What is your editing process like? I use Lightroom and Photoshop for every image I create.
Are there any tips you would like to give to anyone out there who would love to create similar style photos to yours? Learn to use Lightroom and you’ll be able to replicate any style you like while also developing your own unique style.
What are some of your passions/hobbies other than photography? I love hiking and camping. Driving mountain roads in my truck, looking for new places to explore. Listening to Podcasts, playing video games, watching Netflix, reading, hanging out with friends and family. The usual stuff, I’m a simple guy.
Are there any photographers here on Instagram that you love and wish more people knew about? Andrew Upchurch (@andrewmupchurch), Chase Burnett (@chaseburnett_), Luke Konarzewski (@Luke.konarzewski), Rob Sese (@rob.sese), Nathaniel Wise (@nathanielwise), Jake Elko (@jakeelko), Torrey Merritt (@torrey_merritt), Sophia Juliette (@sophiajuliette), There’s so much new talent on Instagram right now!
Which time of year is your favourite for taking photographs? Summer for sure! May-September.
What would be your number one dream destination for a photography adventure? NEW ZEALAND!!!
Do you have any photography related plans for this summer that you would like to share? This summer I’ll be road-tripping all over North America! I’ll be in Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona, Utah, Montana, Wyoming, Alberta, British Columbia, and Alaska of course!
