Would you mind introducing yourself? Hi, my name is Jeroen Verhulst, I'm 40 years old. I’m married and we have a lovely 7 year old daughter. I am a social worker. I help people with autism in their daily life. I’m also a photographer!

Where are you from, and where do you currently live? I was born and raised in the south west of Holland. During my studies I lived in Amsterdam for a few years, but I was happy that I could go back to Zeeland (the province where I live). We live in a little village near the beaches and the sea. Wonderful place to live ;-)
How would you describe your style of photography? I think I’m a landscape photographer. At least thats what my Instagram is all about. I love to “use” the elements I can find here, near my house. So a lot of beaches, dunes, forests and a bit of fog as well.
When did you first fall in love with taking photos? I really started to fall in love after downloading Instagram for the first time, back in the day. I signed up and began using the app right around the time it was first released. It was so great to see all those beautiful pictures from around the world. It really helped me to get inspired and to learn about photography! So around that time, I started to ride around on my bike or in my car and go to all these great places in the neighbourhood to take pictures.
Do you have a favourite photography related memory, whether it be in front or behind the camera? Although I’m not used to it, I shot a wedding in 2016. I was asked by my brother in law and his wife and decided to do it. It was great and it went very well! They were happy with the results, and I was as well. I’m so much happier behind the camera so I won’t tell you that awesome story about that time when I was asked to model for Levis ;-) (thats a joke;-)
What inspires you to take these wonderful photographs? I think the elements around us and the way I, as a photographer, would like to show them and the memories I have made from them. In my landscape work it’s mostly my own memories, and in my more personal work, the memories of other people as well.
What kind of camera do you use? iPhone 8 plus and a FujiFilm XT1.
What is your editing process like? When I use my iPhone as a camera I first start in VSCO. I just do the basics there, adjust the brightness, highlights, shadows, warmth, and sharpness. When needed I also straighten the photo. Most of the time I apply a filter. With the VSCO X they have some great film filters which you can adjust also in strength. I guess the Kodak Portra filters are my favorites. From there I will go into the Darkroom app to apply the white borders and sometimes give a little extra “punch” with another filter (which are also adjustable in strength). When I use my Fuji to shoot I use Lightroom on my computer for the basics and export to my iPhone, I use Airdrop for that. From there I use Darkroom again for the borders and a filter when necessary. I have also created a few presets on my computer which I use 99.9 % of the time.
Are there any tips you would like to give to anyone out there who would love to create similar style photos to yours? Keep things simple! I mean, don’t go crazy on editing and keep you photography technique simple. Look for leading lines which your attention is drawn to. Also try to think about the composition and try these out. Take a couple of shots (when you have the time) with every shot being a different composition. When editing you can choose the one you like the most. I really learned a lot from looking at other people’s work. And ask questions about photography! Most photographers are really easy going so don’t hesitate to ask them questions!
What are some of your passions/hobbies other than photography? Music, especially listening to it! And running, that’s another addiction ;-) I was injured for quite a while but I’m recovered so I'm planning to start again!
Do you have any photography related plans for this summer that you would like to share? This summer I would like to visit the mountains! We don’t have them here in Holland. So the plan is to go to Switzerland, Germany or France with my family. I want to combine family time with some photography time!
Are there any photographers here on Instagram that you love and wish more people knew about? I love Instagram also to be inspired, and not only by the “big boys." There are so many smaller accounts who have such inspiring content. People like George Ell, Chase Burnett, @sky.frames, Jimmy Chung, Marcus Jew, and Wouter van der Weerd are all photographers I really like!
Click here to read our interview with Marcus Jew, and here to check out our interview with Chase Burnett! Also, be sure to stay tuned in the coming months for our upcoming interview with Wouter van der Weerd!
What are some of your dream photography destinations? Iceland, the west coast of the USA, and New Zealand!
Which time of year is your favourite for taking photographs? If I have to choose I will say Autumn. The colors of the trees, their leaves are so beautiful. I also like the autumn sunsets!
