Would you mind introducing yourself? Oh Hi, I'm Gemma and amateur photographer living in Melbourne, Australia. I shoot analog 35mm film. I shoot photos for myself for pure enjoyment. I shoot film for the anticipation and surprise you get when it is developed. It's an honest medium which I try to be in all areas of my life.

Where are you from, and where do you currently live? I am from Australia. I grew up in a coastal town in Central Queensland and moved overseas to the UK alone at 17. I moved back to Australia in my mid-twenties and found home in the city of Melbourne, Victoria. It is full of culture, art, amazing coffee and unpredictable weather & a lot of my absolute favourite people.

How would you describe your style of photography? I have never been drawn to symmetry. I like things to be off centre, crooked, even unbalanced in some ways. I think my photography style is always in motion. I personally don't think I have a fixed way to shoot and I like that. My aesthetic comes in waves, featuring people, landscapes and travel, but I will always come back to the big blue: clouds, sunsets and natural light in all its glory. My partner & I recently got a rescue Whippet called Bertie & he has been part of my “style” of late.

When did you first fall in love with taking photos? My mother was always the person taking the photos so I would say I picked it up from there as she was always taking photos around me. My love of film came back to me when I got back to Australia & I got complacent with the digital world moving too quickly. I cared more about shooting film and using a roll carefully and the surprise of what will be captured in the 36 moments that come back.

What inspires your photography? Light - Friends - Family - Dogs - Gatherings. My drive is my own, focusing on my hobbies and where I spend my free time. The people I surround myself with. I value relationships & friendship more than anything. You are who you surround yourself with and capturing moments with those people is inspiring. Getting outside, making memories, taking photos of them.

Do you have a favourite photography related memory, whether it be in front or behind the camera? I love to witness a good laugh and capturing subjects laughing is my favourite.

What kind of camera do you use? I have a few film cameras a point & shoot Pentax, Yashica Ninja, a Minolta Xe-1 but my go to is my Canon Ae-1.

Are there any tips you would like to give to anyone out there who would love to create similar style photos to yours? Why copy? Shoot what you love and shoot for yourself. With film I love making mistakes. The result can sometimes be out of your control and often happy accidents turn out to be my favourite shots. I never edit any of my photos, as I like the grit & honestly of an untouched photo.
