Erifili Gounari

Erifili Gounari

Would you mind introducing yourself? Where are you from, and where do you currently live? My name is Erifili Gounari (@losporation or @erifilii on Instagram), and I’m 19 years old. I come from Athens, Greece, where I grew up and lived up until I was 17. Then, I moved to Scotland to study and I am now in my second year at the University of Glasgow, studying Digital Media & History of Art!

How would you describe your style of photography? A personal style isn’t something that I have ever thought about, so it’s very difficult for me to define it, I feel like it mostly defines itself as I go along! I really love taking pictures of people, and I like my photos to give off a strong energy, some feeling; some of them are pretty intense and some are very peaceful and dream-like. I shoot both film and digital, and I find that film helps me take pictures that are a lot closer to my desired style. Besides that, I also shoot the occasional gig, so you’ll find some live music photography on my social media as well. And finally, I really love street photography! I’m still learning to be confident enough to just point my camera at a stranger and take a picture, but I’m getting there!

When did you first fall in love with taking photos? When I was 4-5 years old, I would play around with a waterproof and very bulky film Canon, that I’m sure was meant for kids. I would just take pictures of my toys and everything I saw around me, without really thinking of what I was doing, I just enjoyed it. I didn’t start seriously thinking about photography until much later, when I was around 12, and my dad who at the time had already been a photographer for many years started teaching me how to properly do it!

What inspires your photography? I’m generally very inspired by beauty in people and in other people’s work, so I need to constantly be discovering new work and doing new things if I want to stay seriously inspired. I get huge waves of inspiration from time to time, originating from anything that makes me feel happy or in awe, and I get a feeling that I want to depict with my camera, rather than an image if that makes sense.

What kind of camera do you use? When shooting digital, I use a Lumix FZ300, and when shooting film I use a Canon AE-1 with a 50mm f/1.8 lens! When it comes to film I also always shoot in ISO 200.

What's your editing process like? I always edit my digital photos on Lightroom. I don’t always edit my film pictures, but when I do I like using VSCO on my phone, I find that it really does the job for the look I want to achieve.

Are there any photographers here on Instagram that you wish more people knew about? So many! Some of my favourites are @heroesforsale, @deanmartindale, @spicy.meatball, @cschoonover, @the13thsecond… Basically whoever I follow on my photography account @losporation!

What would be your number one dream destination for a photography adventure? Definitely Iceland for pictures of people and landscapes, and I also love the idea of shooting street photography in Russia.

Which time of year is your favourite for taking photographs? My favourite season for photos would be winter, and lucky for me, I live in Scotland, so that’s no problem. I’m used to so much sun in the summer, since I’m usually in Greece, and I don’t find shooting in bright, perfect sunny days as exciting; cloudy or rainy days usually allow for a much more unique result!

The coolest place you've ever been? My favourite has definitely been Florence, Italy. Every single thing I looked at overwhelmed me, everything was just so beautiful!

Where can people find your work? I mostly post my work on my side Instagram, @losporation! I’m currently also trying to post more of my photos on my Tumblr, so eventually I’ll have enough content on there too :)
